Supervision Training Description:

A common concern of young play therapists is that they are uncomfortable watching children's play and discerning whether it is normal or abnormal in nature.  This is not surprising given the fact that even healthy children's play often contains health and unhealthy elements. Play therapy supervisors are often asked about this aspect of children's play with comments such as, "How do I know?".  This is especially true when testimony regarding the child's emotional and psychological health is requested by the legal system. While it is generally understood that the intensity and frequency of abnormal  behavior is greater  with disturbed children, young play therapists still seek specific guidance in making such judgements. Fortunately, there is research which can be helpful (Howe & Slivern, 1981; Perry, 1990; Moustakas, 1959).  This body of play therapy knowledge informs us that healthy and disturbed play appear to separate along 4 categories: Use of Fantasy, Social Inadequacy, Emotional Discomfort, and Maladjustment Subscale. This workshop will acquaint  play therapy supervisors with this information using the Play Therapy Observational Instrument (Perry, 1990) which will assist them guiding young supervisees to distinguish healthy from unhealthy play.

Learning Objectives

1.        List 6 qualities of healthy play observed in the play therapy setting

2.        Describe fundamental elements of maladjusted play observed in play therapy

3.        Use the PTOI  scales to separate healthy from unhealthy play behaviors in play                   therapy
